Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, is once again facing charges of perjury and the potential risk of imprisonment.
The prosecutor’s office in Zagreb, Croatia, has recently accused Modric of providing false testimony, marking a recurrence of similar accusations in the past.
In 2018, the Zagreb city court initiated a trial involving three high-ranking officials from Dinamo Zagreb, who were charged with tax evasion and illegal embezzlement of funds related to Modric’s transfer to Tottenham in 2008 and Dejan Lovren’s transfer to Lyon in 2010.
During the trial, Modric was called upon to testify as a witness regarding his transfer to Tottenham. He was required to provide truthful information about the timing of the contract addendum with Zagreb and the terms concerning future transfer fees.
Modric had previously admitted to signing an addendum to his contract in 2004, which entitled him to receive half of the transfer fee to Tottenham.
However, prosecutors alleged that Modric had made a false statement, as the addendum was actually signed in 2008, after the midfielder had already left Dinamo Zagreb. In December 2018, the court dismissed all charges against Modric due to insufficient evidence.
Now, Modric is facing perjury charges once again. Prosecutors claim to have gathered sufficient evidence to support their case against the midfielder.
It remains uncertain whether Modric will be required to appear in court once more. If found guilty of perjury, Modric could potentially face a prison sentence ranging from six months to five years.
The outcome of this latest legal proceeding will determine the future of Luka Modric and could have significant implications for his professional career and personal life.
The football world will be closely following the developments of this case as it unfolds.
