In January 2020, a heart-wrenching discovery was made in South Africa – a baby albino elephant was found alone in the wild, ensnared in a deadly trap. Severely injured and on the brink of death, rescuers took immediate action to save her.
The infant, named Khanyisa, was taken under the care of the compassionate team at Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD).
What followed was a remarkable journey of healing, resilience, and hope as Khanyisa defied the odds and found her place in the wild.
When Khanyisa was found, a snare tightly wrapped around her neck, ears, and inside her mouth had inflicted deep scarring and life-threatening injuries.
Her condition was critical, and it was uncertain if she would survive.
The founder of HERD, Adine Roode, expressed concerns about the emotional trauma Khanyisa had endured and whether she could fully recover.
However, the young elephant’s determination and spirit surprised everyone.
Khanyisa’s healing process began at HERD, where expert care providers and wildlife veterinarians treated her severe wounds and ensured there were no infections.
The first days were particularly challenging as her carers struggled to bottle-feed her due to the painful wounds surrounding her mouth and cheeks. It took immense love and patience, but eventually, they succeeded.
Proper nutrition was essential to Khanyisa’s recovery, as her compromised health and underweight condition made her susceptible to infections and diarrhea, common threats to rescued baby elephants.
Fortunately, the devoted carers were able to nourish her, and over seven weeks, she gained a healthy 35 kilograms.
Khanyisa’s albinism presented unique challenges, primarily affecting her eyesight. The bright sunshine was a constant battle for her impaired eyes, but remarkably, her severed ear functioned as normal.
Despite these challenges, Khanyisa’s progress was promising, and hopes for her overall recovery grew.
In April 2020, when Khanyisa’s wounds had fully healed, the founder of HERD began integrating her with the local “Jabulani Herd” of elephants.
To everyone’s delight, the herd welcomed Khanyisa into their family, offering her the companionship and support she needed to thrive.
Khanyisa now spends her days from sunrise to sunset with the Jabulani Herd in the wild, experiencing the freedom she was cruelly denied before her rescue.
She returns to the orphanage, where her human family provides essential milk formula, a lifeline she will depend on until she is approximately four years old.
Khanyisa’s story is a testament to the incredible resilience and determination of wild animals.
Through the dedicated efforts of HERD and the support of people from around the world, she has overcome immense challenges to find her place in the wild.
As Khanyisa’s journey continues, she serves as a symbol of hope, inspiring us to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures and their natural habitats.
Together, we can ensure a brighter future for endangered species and celebrate the indomitable spirit of animals like Khanyisa.
