According to UEFA rules, Joao Cancelo is still eligible to receive a medal in case Man City win the Champions League this season.
UEFA rules that the winning team of the Champions League will receive 40 medals and the distribution depends on that team. This means that Man City will be the one to decide whether to award a medal to Cancelo or not. The Portuguese defender left Man City in January and is playing for Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season.
In the Premier League, Cancelo is also eligible to receive a medal if Man City take the throne. The defender has played 17 matches this season, scoring 2 goals and contributing 1 assist for the Etihad Stadium team.
In the past, Liverpool also encountered a similar situation in the case of Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian player joined Barcelona in January 2018. At that time, British media revealed that the leadership of “The Kop” would give a medal to Coutinho if the team won the championship. Unfortunately, Liverpool only won runner-up when losing to Real Madrid in the 2017/18 Champions League final.
Cancelo temporarily parted ways with Man City after a disagreement with coach Pep Guardiola. This deal does not include a mandatory purchase clause. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel also said the two sides have not discussed Cancelo’s future at the Allianz Arena.
In the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League at dawn on April 12, Cancelo sat on the bench and was only launched in the 80th minute when the score was 3-0 for Man City. As the defender stepped out onto the touchline and was about to make a substitution, boos resounded throughout the Etihad Stadium stands.
The possibility of Cancelo returning to Man City in the 2023/24 season is still open. Barcelona are said to be interested in Cancelo’s case if he is no longer part of Pep Guardiola’s plans. Coach Xavi wants to add a right-back capable of attacking and contributing to the game like Cancelo.
